CAMDEN, NJ – Designated hitter Eric Newell hit a walk off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Rowan University a 6-5 win over The College at Brockport on Friday afternoon. The game was played at Campbell’s Field.
With the game tied at five, Rowan first baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) reached base with a two out walk. Newell (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) followed with a double that went over the right fielder’s head, bringing Johanson home.
The Profs improve to 2-2 overall, while the Golden Eagles have a 0-1 record. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) threw the final four innings, allowing two earned runs for the win. Righty James Williamson took the loss for Brockport. He gave up one earned run in four innings.
Newell finished the game with two hits (three at bats), one run scored, one RBI and a double. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) went two for three with two RBIs and a double. Right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) added one hit (two at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) scored once and drove in one run. Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan), third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Johanson each crossed the plate once.
For the Golden Eagles, first baseman Nathan Parrino was two for three with one run scored and one RBI. Shortstop Tom McCormick went one for four with two RBIs. Third baseman Matt Raines contributed with one hit (one at bat), two runs scored and one RBI. Center fielder Max Keado drove in one run and catcher Joe Zaccardo and right fielder Brandon Wroblewski each scored once.
Brockport got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back walks by Zaccardo and Raines, Parrino ripped a RBI single past the shortstop. Raines crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by McCormick. Rowan picked up four runs in the bottom half. Marsch came home on an error. Newell had a infield single to load the bases. Magliaro doubled to right center field knocking in Turano and Woodend.
The Golden Eagles picked up one run in the fourth to come within one (4-3). Wroblewski led off with a single to right center. Zaccardo’s single moved Wroblewski to second. Raines drove Wroblewski in with a RBI single to right center field. The Profs added one run in the bottom of the fifth. Citro got on base with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Marsch.
Rowan was ahead, 5-3 entering the top of the seventh inning. Brockport picked up two runs to tie the game. Raines was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Parrino. McCormick followed with a single to right center that plated Raines. Keado’s sacrifice fly to left field brought Parrino home.
Rowan plays Franklin & Marshall College in a nonconference game on Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m. The game will be held at Campbell’s Field in Camden, NJ.
