GLASSBORO, NJ – The eighth ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team defeated host Rowan University, 14-7 on Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks improve to 5-1, while the Profs have a 3-2 record. Stevens was led by attack Leah Wasserman (jr. Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Reg.) with seven goals. Attack Alyssa Pigott (sr. Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) followed with three goals and one assist. Midfielder Christine Smith (jr. East Northport, NY/Northport) found the net twice. Attack Michelle Buonacuore (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and midfielder Spencer Waybright (fr. West Hartford, CT/Ethel Walker) both contributed with one goal and one assist.
For Rowan, attack Alli Dickey (jr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) compiled two goals and one assist. Attack Tori Hart (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored two goals, while attacks Alyana Morris (sr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) and Lauren Yee (jr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) each had one. Midfielder Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) tallied one goal and two assists.
Stevens took 30 shots and Rowan had 20. Ducks’ goalie Shannon McFadden (sr. Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Inst.) made nine saves. Goalie Kerry Pehnke (so. W. Windsor, NJ/W. Windsor-Plainsboro N.) turned away eight shots in the Profs’ net.
Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Smith found the net with an assist by Waybright at 4:33 and Wasserman added a free position goal at 6:07. Rowan got on the scoreboard at 22:22 after an unassisted goal by Yee. Wasserman’s second goal was at 22:58. Hart scored on a feed from Dickey at 25:01 to cut the deficit to one (3-2). Pigott had an unassisted goal at 28:51 to give Stevens a 4-2 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Pigott’s goal at 32:16 put Stevens ahead, 5-2. Hart recorded a goal on a pass from Valianti at 37:02. Smith had a free position goal (38:05) and Valianti posted an unassisted goal (45:55) to make the score 6-4. The Ducks scored the next six goals to pull away, 12-4. Wasserman found the net four times and Waybright and Buonacuore each had one goal. Dickey recorded an unassisted goal at 55:36. Pigott (56:10) and Wasserman (57:01) both had a goal to push the lead to nine (14-5). Rowan scored the final two goals. Dickey registered an unassisted goal (58:22) and Morris put back a pass from Valianti (59:48).
Next week, Rowan travels to Eastern University on Tuesday, March 30 for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game.
