WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team won 6-1 over Stevens Institute of Technology in its last game in Florida on spring break. The game was played at Chain of Lakes Field.
Left hander Michael Cox (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) earned the win on the mound. He threw five innings, scattering six hits. Cox allowed one unearned run and struck out two hitters. Right hander Jeff White (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pick up the save in relief. White pitched four scoreless innings and only allowed two hits. He struck out four batters. Designated hitter Sean Bowen (so. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and two RBIs. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was three for four at the plate and scored one run.
Catcher Nick Turano (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each added one hit and a RBI. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) both scored two runs.
Rowan has an 8-5 record while Stevens drops to 5-9 on the season. For the Ducks, second baseman Tom Phillips (so. Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) totaled three hits in five at bats and scored one run. Center fielder Mark Rasulo (sr. Irvington, NY/Irvington) recorded the lone RBI. Right fielder Russ Grimes (jr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) was two for three at the plate. Starter Ken Meerendonk (jr. Vernon, NJ/Vernon) went six innings in the loss. He registered seven strikeouts.
Steven’s only run came in the first inning. Rasulo had a RBI double that scored Phillips. Rowan tied the score in the top of the third. Weaver reached base with a single and later came home on a groundout with Turano at bat.
The Profs went up 3-1 after two runs in the sixth. Woodend plated Johanson with a single while Marsch came home on an error. Rowan added three insurance runs in the eighth inning. Johanson scored on a wild pitch for the first run. Bowen’s single drove in Woodend and Marsch.
Rowan will travel to York College (PA) for its next game at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 26.
