Johanson's Ninth Inning Double Gives Rowan a 9-8 Win Over Bridgewater

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Pinch hitter Matt Johanson doubled in third baseman Brad Woodend in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Rowan University a 9-8 victory over Bridgewater College (VA) on Saturday. The game was played at Captains Park.

Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) got on base in the ninth inning with a one out single. One batter later, Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) drove Woodend in with a double. Bridgewater tied the game (8-8) in the top of the eighth inning. Designated hitter Jonathan Mason reached base with a single and later scored on an error.

Rowan improves to 1-1, while Bridgewater has a 1-3 record. Earlier on Saturday, Rowan lost to Christopher Newport University, 5-3. Right-hander Ryan Peterson (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) earned the win in relief, while righty Travis Bullock took the loss for the Eagles.

The Profs were led by right fielder Jordan Marsch (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) with three hits (five at bats), four RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and one home run. Woodend went three for five with three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and a run scored. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored.

For the Eagles, center fielder Drew Easter was two for four with two runs scored and a double. Mason had two hits (four at bats) and scored three times. Third baseman Andrew Hacker went one for two with a home run and three RBIs.

Bridgewater went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Easter got on base with a double and moved to third on a single by utility player Mitchell Edwards. Hackers’ sacrifice fly plated Hester. Rowan answered with five runs on the bottom half. Lenig hit a double and went to third on Weaver’s single. Marsch followed with a three run homer. Woodend added a two run double. 

In the top of the second, Mason scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to three (5-2). Hacker drove in two runs with a home run in the third and first baseman Drew Elkins crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice to tie the game (5-5) in the fourth.

Marsch doubled in the bottom of the fifth and came in on a single by first baseman Eric Newell (jr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights). Woodend added a single that brought Newell home. Mason scored on a single by Easter, who crossed the plate on an error in the top of the sixth. Rowan was ahead, 8-7 after Marsch doubled in Lenig, who reached base on a single in the bottom of the sixth.
