Rowan Falls to The College of New Jersey, 2-1 in NJAC Title Game

GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey field hockey team won 2-1 over Rowan University for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title on Friday night.

The Lions, 16-4, receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. TCNJ was undefeated in the NJAC with a 6-0 mark for its 22nd conference championship. Rowan is 13-6 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC. The Profs will have to wait until Monday, November 8 to see if they receive an at-large bid to the national tournament.

Both of the Lions’ goals were scored by forward Jillian Nealon (so. Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Forwards Kathleen Notos (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and Leigh Mitchell (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each had an assist. Forward Lauren Ross (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) had the Profs’ goal with an assist from midfielder Laura DiMenna (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro).

After a scoreless first half, Ross put Rowan on the scoreboard at the 45 minute mark. She deflected in a shot by DiMenna. Nealon tied the score 14 seconds later with a pass from Notos. At 62:41, Nealon recorded the game-winner with a shot to the left side of the Profs’ cage. She knocked in a cross from Mitchell.

TCNJ totaled 12 shots and Rowan took eight. The Lions’ goalie Shannon Syciarz (jr. Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had two saves. For the Profs, goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) stopped five shots.
