ARLINGTON, VA – Forward Lauren Ross scored two goals to lead the Rowan University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.
The win marked head coach Penny Kempf’s 200th career victory. In 13 seasons, she has a 200-54 record for a .787 winning percentage. This season, Rowan is 13-5 overall, while Christopher Newport has a 14-3 record. In the latest Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Coaches Poll, the Captains are ninth and the Profs are 18th.
Ross (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) put the Profs ahead, 1-0 at 17:49 in the first period. Forward Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had the assist. Ross’ second goal came at 64:50 in the second half with an assist from back Janice Camlin (fr. Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford). Back Sam Williams (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) hit the back of the cage on a penalty corner as time expired.
Rowan took 14 shots and Christopher Newport had 10. Profs’ goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made six saves for her second shutout. Goalie Brittany Bradsher (jr. Hampton, VA/Bethel) stopped 11 shots in the Captains’ cage.
On Friday, November 5, Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m. The winner will be crowned the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
