GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team had a 5-0 shutout over William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Rowan has an 11-5 overall record with a 5-0 conference mark. William Paterson is 4-11 overall and 1-3 in the NJAC. Profs’ forward Julie Cairone (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) posted one goal and one assist. Midfielders Janna Tighe (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gateway Reg.), Ariel Comer (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Erin Bernat (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and forward Nicole Valianti (sr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) all had one goal. Midfielder Rachael Dix (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) dished three assists, while midfielder Ashley Adams (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) had one.
Rowan took 26 shots and William Paterson had six. Profs’ goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made one save in 50:57. Goalies Jen Goldberg (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and Steph Colombo (fr. Moorestown, NJ/Camden Catholic) played 14:03 and 5:00 respectively. Pioneers’ goalie Meghan Trivett (jr. Highlands, NJ/Middletown N.) stopped three shots.
At 7:05 in the first period, Valianti had an unassisted goal. She shot the ball the from the right side of the circle into the left corner of the cage. Just over two minutes later, Tighe scored on a penalty corner. Cairone passed the ball to Dix at the top of the circle and Dix found Tighe for the goal. Bernat hit the back of the cage on a penalty stroke at 12:37 for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Cairone’s goal came at 43:30 in the second stanza. Dix passed the ball to Adams on the right side of the cage. Adams fired a shot and Cairone deflected it passed the goalie. At 68:32, Dix took a shot from just inside the right side of the circle and Comer tipped it in.
Rowan hosts Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m.
