MONTCLAIR, NJ – Midfielder Marisa Schoepflin scored the winning goal for the Rowan University field hockey team in a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY) on Saturday evening. The game was played at Montclair State University.
Schoepflin (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded the game-winner at 61:38 when she knocked a rebound into the right side of the cage. The Profs, ranked 14th in the nation, have a 7-4 record while the Engineers are 3-7 overall.
Rowan was ahead 2-1 after the first half. RPI got on the scoreboard at 11:56 with a goal by forward Kiersten Ryan (fr. Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) and forward Sandy Turnbull (sr. Upperville, VA/Chatham Hall) had an assist. Forward Julie Cairone (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tied the score at 13:35. Cairone redirected a shot by back Lauren Connor (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor). Midfielder Ashley Adams (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) put the Profs ahead with an unassisted goal at 22:20.
In the second period, midfielder Alissa Peterson (so. Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) tied the score at two (43:50) for the Engineers. Peterson blasted a shot from the top left hand side of the circle.
Rowan took 15 shots and RPI had six. Goalies Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Jen Goldberg (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur J. Johnson) made one and two saves respectively for the Profs. For the Engineeers, goalie Briana Earle (jr. Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) stopped six shots.
Rowan plays at home against defending national champion Salisbury University on Wednesday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
