ASTON, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won 79-46 over Penn State Brandywine in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Tuesday night. The classic is being held at Neumann University.
In the other first round game, Valley Forge Christian College faces Neumann. Rowan will play Valley Forge Christian in the second round on Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by Penn State Brandywine against Neumann at 8 p.m.
Four players scored in double figures for the Profs. Guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) led the way with 14 points followed by forward Steve Secula (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) with 13. Forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJU/Shawnee) contributed with 12 points and guard Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) added 11. Hartnett also grabbed nine rebounds. Guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) dished five assists.
Rowan has a 9-2 record and a six game win streak. Penn State Brandywine drops to 0-8 on the season. For the Nittany Lions, guards Kyle Hagerty and TJ Hazinsky each scored 13 points. Forward Dave Segura totaled six points and seven rebounds.
The Profs started the game with an 11-2 run in the first 2:52. Secula and Hartnett each scored four points in the surge. Hagerty’s three-pointer at 15:22 cut the deficit to six points (14-8). Rowan followed with eight straight points to lead by 15 points (23-8) at 12:03. Hartnett made a layup at 8:25 for a 13 point advantage (26-13). Penn State Brandywine trailed 28-18 with 6:37 remaining. Hazinsky hit a jumper (4:52) and Seguara had a tip-in (4:13) to pull within six points (28-22). Rowan ended the half with 10 unanswered points to lead by 16 points (38-22). Hughes and White scored five and four points respectively and forward Derek Piccini (sr. Forward Tim Matchett (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Pritchett scored five points apiece. Matchett’s layup gave the Profs a 33 point lead (77-44) with 2:35 on the clock. The teams each had one more basket to end the game.
