GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team shut out Haverford College, 4-0 in the home opener on Saturday afternoon.

Forward Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) led the Profs with two goals while forward Lauren Ross (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) and midfielder Jenna Lombardo (sr. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.) each had one. Valianti also contributed with one assist along with midfielder Julie Cairone (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and back Lauren Conner (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.).

Rowan, ranked 10th in the nation, has an overall record of 2-0 while Haverford drops to 0-2 on the season. The Profs took 15 total shots while the Fords had seven. Goalie Lisa Apt (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) stopped seven shots for her second shutout. For Haverford, goalie Maggie Cronin (jr. Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) made six saves.

Ross put Rowan on the scoreboard at 10:15. She deflected a shot by Valianti who received a pass from Cairone on a penalty corner. Valianti made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal (15:30). She blasted a shot just inside the circle to the lower left corner of the Fords’ net. Lombardo scored the third goal at 20:14. Her shot hit the left side of the cage. In the second half, Valianti’s second goal came on a penalty corner. Conner took the corner and had a centering pass to Valianti.

Rowan is home again on Wednesday, September 9 against Ursinus College at 7 p.m.
