MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team had a 7-4 victory over Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday.
Rowan improves to 16-8-1 overall and 5-4 in the conference. Ramapo has a 10-11 record and a 3-4 NJAC mark. Right-hander Carl Taylor (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Winslow Twp.) picked up the win in relief. Taylor (1-2) tossed three innings, allowing just two hits and one run. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched the ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season. Right-hander Matt Jenisch (fr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) took the loss for the Roadrunners. Jenisch (0-1) gave up three runs, two earned in 2.1 innings of relief.
Profs’ right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went two for five with three RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) added two hits (five at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with a home run. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was two for three with two runs scored.
For the Roadrunners, third baseman Kevin Knox (fr. Matawan, NJ/Matawan) had two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Designated hitter David Deredita (sr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) posted one hit (four at bats) and two runs scored. Center fielder/right fielder Mike Manges (sr. Glen Rock, NJ/Paramus Catholic) hit a solo home run. Left fielder Joey Cacchiola (jr. Union, NJ/Union) and catcher Tim Gaven (sr. Union, NJ/Union) each drove in a run.
Ramapo took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Deredita led off the first inning with a walk and moved to third on Knox’s double. Deredita crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Gaven brought Knox home with a single to left field. In the second, Cacchiola’s single knocked in Deredita.
Rowan tied the game (3-3) with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. McMullin singled in Ready. Delleani and McMullin both came home on a passed ball. The Profs went ahead 6-3 after one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Johanson hit a solo homer in the sixth. Reindel doubled and shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) scored in the seventh. McMullin followed with a single that plated Reindel.
Ramapo came within two runs (6-4) following Manges’ solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. Rowan added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. McMullin’s single to center field brought Ready home.
Rowan hosts New Jersey City University in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11 at noon.
