Rowan Defeats Ursinus, 16-9

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team defeated Ursinus College, 16-9 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.

Rowan improves to 8-7, while Ursinus has a 5-12 record. The Profs were led by midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) with three goals and one assist. Attack Tori Hart (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and midfielder Michelle Lubrano (fr. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) both contributed with two goals and one assist. Attack Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and midfielder Carly Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) each found the net twice. Midfielder Ali Goodman (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added one goal and two assists. Attacks Alli Dickey (so. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and Lauren Yee (so. Mendham, NJ/Mendham) and midfielders Trish Harrington (so. Mahwah, NJ/Suffern (NY)) and Nicole Valianti (so. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) chipped in with one goal apiece.

For the Bears, midfielder Elizabeth Cannon (jr. Garrison, NY/James I. O’Neil) recorded two goals and two assists. Attack Lindsay Urban (so. Doylestown, PA/CB East) and midfielders Kim Peifer (fr. Collegeville, PA/Methacton) and Alyssa Thren (fr. Barto, PA/Upper Perkiomen) all found the net twice. Attack Catie Cameron (sr. Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) scored once, while attack Amy Sezack (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) posted one assist.

Rowan took 28 shots and Ursinus had 21. Profs’ goalie Alicia Mannino (sr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made seven saves. Goalies Alex McBride (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Emma Bacharach (so. Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) each played one half in the Bears’ net. McBride stopped six shots and Bacharach turned away two.

Peifer put Ursinus ahead 1-0 at 2:06 in the first period. Rowan went up 2-1 following free position goals by Lubrano (6:31) and Angstadt (8:27). Cannon’s goal at 8:52 tied the game at two. Hart (13:44) and Urban (15:17) each found the net once to make the score, 3-3. Valianti (17:18) and Welsh (17:58) had back-to-back goals to give Rowan a 5-3 lead. Urban and Peifer answered with goals at 18:32 and 19:56 to tie the game (5-5). Welsh (20:41) and Cannon (22:24) exchanged goals. Crennan had a free position goal at 25:02 and Angstadt scored on an assist from Lubrano at 26:59 to give the Profs an 8-6 halftime advantage.

In the second period, Lubrano had her second goal at 37:02. Thren scored at 39:03, but Hart countered with a goal 59 seconds later. Cameron’s goal at 42:05 made the score, 10-8. Rowan got two straight goals from Crennan (43:06) and Harrington (47:08) to increase the lead to four (12-8). Thren found the net at 49:03 for Ursinus’ final goal. The Profs closed out the game with goals by Goodman (51:31), Dickey (54:04), Yee (56:42) and Angstadt (59:56). 

Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The winner will take home the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship.
