GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Rutgers-Camden, 5-4 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday.
The score was tied (4-4) after nine innings. Rowan held Rutgers-Camden in the top half. In the bottom, left fielder Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) singled up the middle. Weaver went to second when shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) reached base on an error. Magliaro and Weaver moved to second and third respectively on a double steal. Weaver came home on a wild pitch for the winning run.
Rutgers-Camden scored one run in the top of the ninth to lead 4-2. Shortstop John Santilli (fr. Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) singled to right field, bringing home third baseman Kyle Ballay (jr. Delran, NJ/Delran). In the bottom half, Magliaro led off with a single to center field. Pinch hitter Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) followed with a two run shot over the center field wall to send the game into extra innings.
Rowan improves to 20-11-1 overall and 9-7 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 9-24 record and a 4-12 NJAC mark. Rowan right-hander Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) earned the win in relief. Burdette (1-0) tossed 0.1 scoreless innings and struck out one hitter. Righty Michael Kondrath (jr. Medford Lakes, NJ/Holy Cross) pitched 1.1 innings for the loss. Kondrath (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits.
Magliaro finished the game with three hits (five at bats) and two runs scored. Second baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) went one for three with two RBIs and a double. Johanson was one for one with two RBIs, one run scored and a homer. Catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/S. Brunswick) and Weaver each scored once.
For the Scarlet Raptors, center fielder Scott Fruits (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Paul VI) had one hit (four at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Dean Straga (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) added one hit (five at bats), one RBI, one run scored and a triple. Catcher Greg Hunt (jr. Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) and Santilli both recorded one RBI. Left fielder Dennis Hill (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) and Ballay scored one run apiece.
Rutgers-Camden went ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning. Hill doubled down the left field line. Fruits followed with a double to right field that plated Hill. Rowan had a 2-1 advantage after two runs in the fifth. Lenig hit a double to left center field that brought Magliaro and Barnshaw home. The Scarlet Raptors answered with two runs in the top of the sixth. Straga’s triple knocked in Fruits and Straga scored on Hunt’s single.
In the final games of the regular season, Rowan hosts Montclair State University in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 at noon.
