MONTCLAIR, NJ – Midfielder Carly Welsh scored five goals to lead the Rowan University women’s lacrosse team over conference opponent Montclair State University, 15-10 on Saturday.
Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) also had two assists. Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with three goals while attack Alli Dickey (so. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and midfielder Ali Goodman (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had two apiece. Attacks Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Alayna Morris (jr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) and midfielder Trish Harrington (so. Mahwah, NJ/Suffern (NY)) each added one goal. Attack Tori Hart (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Dickey both had an assist.
For MSU, midfielder Marykate DiBenedetto (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored four goals and assisted on one. Attacks Lauren Adams (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) and Kayla Henderson (so. Landing, NJ/Roxbury) each hit the net two times. Midfielder Cora Delfini (fr. New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) registered one goal and one assist. Attack Maggie Fallon (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) had one goal while midfielder Morgan MacPhee (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) assisted on one.
Rowan improves to 6-5 on the season with a 3-0 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Montclair State is 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Profs totaled 29 shots and the Red Hawks took 24. Rowan goalie Alicia Mannino (sr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) stopped nine shots. In the MSU net, Tracey Manella (so. Haworth, NJ/NV-Demarest) and Christina Crossin (fr. Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) made four and two saves respectively.
The Profs started the game with four straight goals. Angstadt scored the first (5:15) with an assist from Hart . Welsh followed 41 seconds later with the second goal on a free position shot. She then had an unassisted goal at 8:02. Angstadt recorded the fourth goal (10:56) on a pass from Dickey. MSU cut the deficit to two (4-2) after two goals by Adams. Crennan hit the net with a free position shot to lead 5-2. Henderson’s unassisted goal with 6:31 remaining ended the first half scoring. Rowan was ahead at the intermission 5-3.
Rowan opened the final period with four unanswered goals for a 9-3 advantage. Dickey recorded the first two followed by one from Welsh and Angstadt. The Red Hawks trailed 9-5 after DiBenedetto and Henderson each scored. Welsh had two consecutive goals and Goodman scored one that made the score 12-5. DiBenedetto scored MSU’s sixth goal with 11:27 remaining.
The Profs had three goals in a 1:37 span to lead 15-6. Morris, Harrington and Goodman all scored once. The Red Hawks ended the game with four straight goals. Fallon scored unassisted then Delfini and DiBenedetto each had a free position goal. DiBenedetto found the net one more time with two seconds left on the clock.
Next week, Rowan travels to FDU-Florham on Tuesday, April 14 for a 4 p.m. game.
