Rowan Gets By Eastern, 11-9

ST. DAVIDS, PA – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team defeated Eastern University, 11-9 on Tuesday.

Midfielder Carly Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) led the Profs with three goals. Attacks Tori Hart (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Alli Dickey (so. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and midfielder Nicole Valianti (so. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) each contributed with two goals. Attack Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) added one goal apiece. Angstadt also totaled two assists while Crennan and Hart both had one.

Rowan improves to 4-4 overall and Eastern drops to 4-5 on the season. For the Eagles, midfielder Jessie Basch (sr. Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) scored four goals and midfielder/attack Grace Griffith (so. Amherst, MA/Amherst Reg.) followed with three. Midfielder/attack Jess Field (so. East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) and attack Allie Fultz (fr. Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) each hit the net one time.

Eastern totaled 24 shots and Rowan took 20. In the Profs’ goal, Kerry Pehnke (fr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) made eight saves in 48:20. Goalie Alicia Mannino (sr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) played 11:40 in net. Eagles’ goalie Kim Campbell (sr. Malvern, PA/Great Valley) stopped eight shots.

The Profs started the game with four straight goals in 6:33. Welsh scored twice while Valianti and Hart each had one. Griffith put the Eagles on the scoreboard at 9:53. Hart had her second goal at 10:41 with an assist from Crennan. Eastern pulled within two goals (5-3) after Basch scored two in a row. The Profs answered with goals by Dickey and Valianti to end the half with a 7-3 lead.

Crennan (32:33) and Welsh (37:30) each scored to give the Profs a 9-4 advantage. The Profs led 10-5 after Angstadt’s free position goal at 40:11. Eastern came back with four unanswered goals to trail 10-9 with 8:13 remaining. Griffith, Basch, Fultz and Field each had a goal. Dickey sealed the win with an assist from Angstadt at the nine second mark.

Rowan hosts conference opponent Kean University on Thursday, April 2 at 6 p.m.
