Rowan Loses to Gwynedd-Mercy, 6-3

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Gwynedd-Mercy College baseball team defeated Rowan University, 6-3 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.

The Griffins are 12-7, while the Profs have a 12-6-1 record. Left-hander Ryan McNamara (sr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Twp.) picked up the win in relief. McNamara (3-1) tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one run. Righty Sean Middleton (sr. Perkasie, PA/Lansdale Catholic) pitched the final two innings for his first save of the year. Right-hander Tony Cavalier (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) took the loss for Rowan. Cavalier (0-2) went 4.1 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, while striking out six batters.
Right fielder Albert DiDomenico (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) paced the Griffins with two hits (four at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Center fielder Austin Ley (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) added two hits in five trips to the plate. Pitcher/designated hitter Tim McMenamin (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) scored two runs and third baseman Mike Albert (so. Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) recorded two RBIs.

Profs’ second baseman Brandon Winkler (fr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) compiled two hits (three at bats), one RBI and a double. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went two for five. Left fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon), right fielder Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and catcher Nick Turano (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) each scored once.

Gwynedd-Mercy went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. DiDomenico led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the second, DiDomenico walked with the bases loaded bringing home left fielder Dan Strack (jr. Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost Prep). Rowan got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom half. Winkler doubled down the right field line plating Weaver.

The Griffins added one run in the third inning and two in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. McMenamin scored on a wild pitch in the third. DiDomenico came in on an error and McMenamin crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice in the fourth. Rowan cut the deficit to three runs (5-2) with one run in the fifth. Evans led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the sixth, Albert grounded out knocking in catcher Nick DiEnno (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) from third. The Profs got one run in the bottom half, but the Griffins held on for the win. Pinch hitter Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) singled through the left side bringing Turano home.

Rowan returns to its conference schedule at home against Ramapo College on Thursday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m.
