GLASSBORO, NJ – Midfielder Carly Welsh scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime to give Rowan University an 11-10 victory over Drew University on Saturday.
The game was tied, 10-10 at the end of the second period. Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) collected the ball and drove by a defender to score what proved to be the game-winner with just 52 seconds left to play.
Rowan improves to 3-4 overall, while Drew has a 3-5 record. The Profs were led by midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) with three goals and three assists. Attack Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Robert) also found the net three times. Midfielder Ali Goodman (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Welsh contributed with two goals apiece and midfielder Nicole Valianti (so. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) scored once.
For the Rangers, midfielders Lyndsay Rossi (fr. Pennington, NJ/Pennington School) and Stacie Brown (so. Upper Marlboro, MD/Calverton School) and attack Cara Jeffries (so. Central Square, NY/Paul V Moore) all recorded three goals. Jeffries also had one assist. Attack Rebecca Schild (so. Princeton, NJ/Princeton) registered one goal and one assist.
Rowan out shot Drew, 36-23. Goalie Kerry Pehnke (fr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) made eight saves in the Profs’ net. Goalie Rachel Hanley (so. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) stopped 14 shots for the Rangers.
Rowan went ahead 2-0 following two straight goals by Crennan in the first period. Jeffries got Drew on the scoreboard with a goal at 5:21. Angstadt’s unassisted goal at 8:39 put the Profs up 3-1. Rossi answered with goals at 9:22 and 11:00 to tie the game (3-3). Goodman found the net at 16:36 and Angstadt closed out the half with a goal at the seven second mark. Rowan led 5-3 at the intermission.
In the second, Jeffries recorded a goal at 30:39 to make the score 5-4. The Profs scored three consecutive goals for an 8-4 advantage. Valianti, Crennan and Welsh each had one. Schild’s first goal came at 42:47 and Goodman posted her second goal at 43:15. Trailing 9-5, Drew scored the next four goals to tie the game (9-9) with 9:43 left in regulation. Brown had two goals, while Jeffries and Rossi each had one. Angstadt’s unassisted goal at 50:30 gave the Profs a 10-9 lead. Brown’s goal with 2:11 on the clock sent the game into overtime.
Rowan travels to Eastern University on Tuesday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
