Kean Sweeps Doubleheader Over Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Kean University baseball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over Rowan University on Saturday. The Cougars won the first game, 6-3 in 12 innings and took the second game, 10-6 in seven innings.

Kean improves to 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Rowan has an 11-5-1 record with a 1-2 NJAC mark. Cougars’ right-hander Drew Campbell (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) earned the victory in game one. Campbell (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Rowan lefty Michael Cox (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) gave up one run in 1/3 of an inning of relief for the loss.

Second baseman Mike Moceri (jr. Yardville, NJ/Hamilton E.) led Kean with four hits (six at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and a home run. Shortstop Nick Ramagli (fr. Emerson, NJ/Emerson) went two for four with one RBI, one run scored and a double. Center fielder Vinny Galya (fr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge), right fielder Michael Mattonelli (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and third baseman Dave Zavistoski (jr. Edison, NJ/Edison) all scored one run, while first baseman Lee Cavico (fr. North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) had one RBI.

For Rowan, center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) was two for four with two runs scored and a double. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a double and a RBI. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) recorded one RBI and second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) scored once.

Both teams scored one run in the fifth inning. In the top half, Moceri singled in Galya. Mull led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out in the bottom half. Mull scored on a fielder’s choice with Magliaro at bat. Cavico’s ground out in the sixth plated Ramagli, who reached base on a double. Rowan tied the score (2-2) in the bottom half. Delleani walked and Marsch drove him in with a double.

Kean pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the eighth. Moceri doubled to left center field and moved to third on a sacrifice. Ramagli’s sacrifice fly brought Moceri home. In the bottom of the ninth, Mull got on base with a single and crossed the plate on a double play. In the top of the 12th, Zavistoski and Mattonelli singled. Moceri followed with a three run homer to give Kean the win.

In the night cap, left-hander Nick Cesare (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) pitched 4.2 innings for the win. Cesare (2-2) gave up six runs, five earned and struck out three batters. Righty Pedro Rivera (sr. Elizabeth, NJ/Union Catholic) was on the mound for the final 2.1 innings. He recorded four strikeouts and surrendered just one hit for his first save of the year. Right-hander Kevin O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) suffered the loss for the Profs. O’Hara (2-1) allowed seven runs, six earned in 2.1 innings.

Mattonelli paced the Cougars with three hits (four at bats) and two runs scored. Left fielder D.J. Breckenridge (fr. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) went two for four with three runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. Catcher Mike Manganiello (sr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) contributed with one hit (four at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a homer. Ramagli and Moceri each drove in two runs.

Rowan first baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) posted four hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) and third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) both scored twice, while Delleani drove in two runs.

Kean scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Moceri had a RBI single that knocked in Breckenridge. Mattonelli scored on a passed ball and Moceri came home on Ramagli’s ground out. In the bottom half, Delleani ripped a two RBI single to right field that plated Ready and Lenig. Kean added one run in the second when Breckenridge scored on an error.

In the top of the third, Manganiello hit a three run homer to put Kean up 7-2. Barnshaw walked and came home on an error in the bottom half. The Cougars added to their lead with one run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Ramagli. The Profs cut the deficit to two (7-5) with three runs in the fifth. Ready’s three run homer plated Lenig and Barnshaw. In the seventh, Breckenridge had a home run that drove in Zavistoski before the game was called due to darkness.
