EWING, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat The College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday.
The Profs trailed 2-1 heading into the ninth inning. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) led off with a single to left field. Pinch runner Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) took Ready’s place and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy). Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) followed with a single to center field that plated Evans. McMullin stole second and went to third on an error. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring McMullin. Designated hitter Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) drove in left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) with a single to left field.
Rowan improves to 11-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. TCNJ has a 7-8-1 record with a 0-1 NJAC mark. Right-hander Kyle Norman (so. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) picked up his first win. He tossed one scoreless inning in relief. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) was on the mound for the ninth inning and earned his seventh save. Right-hander Eric Gertie (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) took the loss for the Lions. He threw one inning and gave up three runs, one earned.
McMullin led the Profs with one hit (four at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), Evans and Marsch each scored once. Ready and Weaver added one RBI apiece.
For the Lions, shortstop Jeff Toth (sr. Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) recorded three hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Second baseman Adam Tussey (sr. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) went one for four with one run scored and a double. Right fielder James Ruzich (fr. Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) contributed with one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.
TCNJ took a 2-0 advantage with one run in the first and third innings. Tussey reached base with a double in the first. He moved to third on a fly out and crossed the plate on a single by Toth. In the third, Toth hit a single that knocked in Ruzich, who got on with a single. Rowan cut the deficit to 2-1 with one run in the top of the fourth. Reindel singled and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a fly out and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ready.
Rowan hosts Kean University in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 at noon.
