Ripon Snaps Rowan's Winning Streak, 10-8

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Ripon College (WI) baseball team held on to defeat Rowan University, 10-8 at the Russ Matt Tournament on Thursday.

Ripon has a 2-6 record, while Rowan is 7-2-1. The loss snapped the Profs’ seven game win streak. Right-hander Jason Wierschke earned the win in relief. Wierschke (2-0) pitched three innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Righty Kurt Roeder threw the final inning for his second save of the year. Rowan right-hander Ryan Peterson (so. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) took the loss. Peterson (0-1) threw 0.2 innings and gave up one run.

The Red Hawks were led by left fielder Aaron Kastner with three hits (four at bats), one run scored, one RBI and two doubles. First baseman Matt Dwyer was three for five with one run scored. Center fielder John Henrickson registered three hits in five at bats, three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Alex Duros was two for five with two runs scored and one RBI.

For the Profs, second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) went four for five with three runs scored and a double. Designated hitter Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) posted two hits (five at bats), three RBIs and a double. Right fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) added two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was one for four with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Rowan went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Ready singled in Evans and Woodend came home on a double play. In the bottom half, Duros hit a single that scored second baseman Brett Wegner. Henrickson followed with a double that plated Dwyer and Duros. Rowan tied the game (3-3) with one run in the top of the fourth. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) was hit by a pitch. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mull scored on a ground out by shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.).

The Profs posted three runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-3 advantage. Delleani crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by Woodend with the bases loaded. Ready ripped a double that brought Woodend and Magliaro home. Ripon recorded three runs in the bottom half to tie the game (6-6). Shortstop Bryant Bullock’s single knocked in Henrickson and catcher Nick Whitty scored on a single by pinch hitter/second baseman Ryan Paul. Kastner hit a double that plated Bullock.


Both teams registered one run in the seventh inning. In the top half, Delleani came home on a bases loaded single by Woodend. Henrickson’s single scored Duros in the bottom half. Ripon took a 10-7 lead with three runs in the eighth. Third baseman Nick Beaman drove in Paul and Kastner with a triple. Beaman crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the top of the ninth, Delleani reached base on a double. Pinch hitter John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) brought Delleani home with a single.

Rowan continues its Florida trip on Friday, March 20 against FDU-Florham at 9 a.m.
