WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team topped Denison University (OH), 19-7 at the Russ Matt Tournament on Monday. The game was called in the eighth inning with the Profs at bat due to the 10-run rule.
Rowan improves to 6-1-1 overall, while Denison is 3-4. Right-hander Robert Rose (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) picked up the win in relief. Rose (2-0) tossed 1.1 innings and gave up three runs. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched 1.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts for his second save. Right-hander Dale McOsker (0-2) took the loss for the Big Red. He allowed 10 runs, seven earned in five innings.
Rowan was led by left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) with three hits (six at bats), eight RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went four for five with three runs scored, two RBIs and a double. Designated hitter Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was two for three with two runs scored and one RBI. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) and shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had two hits and two runs scored apiece.
The Profs went up 6-0 with four runs in the first inning and two in the second. Marsch hit a grand slam in the first inning. Magliaro scored on an error and Ready singled in Reindel in the second. Denison got on the scoreboard in the third. Second baseman Justin Held hit a single that plated shortstop Andy Johnson. Rowan added two runs in the bottom half. McMullin came home on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Brandon Winkler (fr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI) and Mull scored on an error.
Denison cut the deficit to 8-2 with one run in the top of the fourth. Johnson singled and third baseman Kevin Teague scored. In the bottom of the fifth, Reindel hit a single that knocked in first baseman Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Winkler. The Big Red came within three (10-7) with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Catcher Alex Horn drove in Teague with a single in the sixth. Johnson’s sacrifice fly plated left fielder David Holmes and Held’s single brought Horn home. In the seventh, right fielder David Krieger came in on a sacrifice fly by Johnson. Center fielder Danny Pritz followed with a single that scored Teague.
Rowan exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the game early. Reindel scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) crossed the plate on an error. Marsch hit a two run homer.
After a double by McMullin and single by Mull, pinch hitter Sam Parks (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown) hit a three run shot. Marsch came to the plate again with the bases loaded and ripped a two run single.
Rowan is off on Tuesday, March 17 and returns to action against Salem State College (MA) on Wednesday, March 18 at 9 a.m.
