GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball came from behind to defeat Alvernia University, 4-3 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
Alvernia led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Rowan second/third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) led off with a double to right center field. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) singled to give the Profs runners at first and second. Right fielder John McMullin’s (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) single up the middle loaded the bases with one out. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) hit a line drive that bounced off the third baseman’s glove and Lenig and Mull came home. Catcher Nick Turano (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) hit a double to right center field plating McMullin and pinch runner Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) for the winning run.
Rowan improves to 3-1-1, while Alvernia has a 9-5 record. Rowan platooned its pitchers. Right-hander Jay Gallen (jr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) earned the win. He tossed one inning, allowing one run and striking out two hitters. Righty Mike Swietanski (so. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) started the game and recorded five strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Right-hander Chuck Nicholas (so. Boyertown, NJ/Boyertown) pitched a complete game for the Crusaders. He allowed four runs on eight hits. Nicholas had seven strikeouts.
The Profs were led by Lenig with two hits (four at bats), one run scored and a double. Turano went one for three with two RBIs and a double. Mull and McMullin were both one for four with one run scored.
For the Crusaders, second baseman Tim Ahlquist (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) went three for four with one run scored. Left fielder Mike Latona (fr. Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) added two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman Eric Domitrovits (fr. Northampton, PA/Northampton) was two for three.
Alvernia went up 1-0 in the top of the sixth. Designated hitter Reid Martin (so. Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Latona singled to left field plating Martin. In the seventh, catcher Steve Bealer (jr. Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) singled to center field and went to third on a single by Ahlquist. Bealer came home on an error with Martin at bat. The Crusaders’ final run came in the top of the ninth. Ahlquist singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a ground out and crossed the plate on a balk by Gallen.
Rowan travels to Orlando, FL for the Russ Matt Tournament on Saturday-Saturday, March 14-21. In the first game, the Profs will face Worcester State College (MA) on Saturday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
