NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Rowan University baseball team was defeated by Christopher Newport University, 17-10 in a nonconference game on Saturday.

Christopher Newport has a 5-0-1 record, while Rowan is 0-1-1. Right-hander Ian Lenda (so. Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) got the win in relief. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out one hitter. Righty Carl Taylor (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Winslow Twp.) suffered the loss for the Profs. He tossed 1.2 innings in relief, surrendering eight runs, two earned.

The Captains were led by center fielder Mike Giarrizzi (sr. Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) with three hits (five at bats), three runs scored and three RBIs. Right fielder Eric Cole (sr. Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) went three for five with four RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Third baseman Parker Neal (jr. Strasburg, VA/Strsburg) was three for five with two runs scored and two doubles. Catcher Steven Lindemuth (fr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) contributed with three hits (five at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Second baseman Zach Hutchison (so. Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) had two hits in six at bats, two runs scored and one RBI. Shortstop Trae Bailey (sr. Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) added two RBIs and one run scored.

For Rowan, right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went three for five with five RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) was two for four with three runs scored, one RBI and a triple. Designated hitter Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) posted three hits (six at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had two hits in four at bats with two RBIs and one run scored. Shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) chipped in with two hits (three at bats) and one run scored.

Rowan went ahead 6-0 with four runs in the first inning and two in the second. McMullin hit a grand slam in the first. In the second, Magliaro came home on a ground out by Woodend and McMullin drove in Mull with a single to right field. Christopher Newport answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Shortstop Chris Despins (jr. Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) led off with a walk and Cole’s two run homer brought him in. Giarrizzi knocked in designated hitter David Fennessey (so. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) with a single.

The Captains cut the deficit to two (6-4) with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Giarrizzi scored on a Despins’ sacrifice fly. The Profs added a run in the fifth. Mull hit a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded bringing home catcher Sean Bowen (fr. South Harrison, NJ/Kingsway Reg.). In the bottom half, Hutchison singled in a run and Bailey reached base on an error that scored two runs. Cole’s sacrifice fly plated Hutchison to give the Captains an 8-7 lead.

Christopher Newport exploded with seven runs in the sixth inning. Neal came home on an error. Bailey reached base on an error and left fielder Travis Medina (so. Fairfax, VA/Robinson) and Giarrizzi scored. Hutchison came home on an error, while Cole singled in Bailey. Fennessey’s sacrifice fly plated Despins and Lindemuth brought Cole home with a single to right field.

In the top of the seventh, shortstop Ed Eisenhart (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) scored on a single by Woodend and Ready followed with a single to left that knocked in Mull. Christopher got two runs in the eighth for a 17-9 advantage. Pitch hitter Joey Martin (jr. Stafford, VA/N. Stafford) crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Giarrizzi hit a sacrifice fly that scored Neal. Rowan added one run in the top of the ninth. Mull led off with a triple to left field and came home on a ground out by pinch hitter Brandon Winkler (fr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI).

Rowan plays Bridgewater College (VA) at 3 p.m. today. The game will be played at Christopher Newport.
