NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Rowan University baseball team topped Bridgewater College (VA), 10-9 in six innings for its first victory of the season. The game was played at Christopher Newport University and was called due to darkness after the sixth inning.
Rowan has a 1-1-1 record, while Bridgewater is 2-2. Right-hander Robert Rose (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) earned his first victory. He went five innings, allowing four earned runs, while striking out five batters. Righty Jay Gallen (jr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) picked up the save in relief. He tossed one inning, giving up one run. Right-hander Drew Elkins (0-2) (so. Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) took the loss. He pitched six innings, surrendering three earned runs. Elkins recorded nine strikeouts.
Rowan was led by catcher Bill Donovan (fr. Mantua, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) with three hits (four at bats), two RBIs and a double. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went two for three with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) posted two hits in three at bats, two runs scored, one RBI and a double.
For Bridgewater, outfielder Brad Buracker (sr. Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) was two for four with one run scored. Second baseman Aaron Read (sr. Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) contributed with two hits (three at bats), two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Outfielder Blake Stokely (jr. Virginia Beach, VA/Frank Cox) went one for two with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run.
Rowan went ahead 4-1 after the first inning. In the top half, McMullin singled in designated hitter Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Mull drove in left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and McMullin with a single. Donovan followed with a single that plated Mull. Buracker scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom half.
The Profs tacked on three runs in the top of the second. Second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) came home on an error. Marsch singled in first baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) and Marsch scored on an error. In the bottom half, catcher Andrew Chrismer (sr. Gettsyburg, PA/Littlestown) hit a solo homer.
Rowan added one run in the third and fourth innings to go ahead 9-2. In the third, Woodend singled in third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). McMullin reached with a double and he scored on a single by Donovan in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Stokely hit a three run homer to make the score, 9-5.
The Eagles added three runs in the fifth. First baseman Michael Lenox (sr. Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) tripled in shortstop Tyler Hodges (so. Broadway, VA/Broadway). Read’s single plated Lenox and outfielder Kevin Kirk’s (so. Manassas, VA/Osbourn) single brought home Read. Rowan went up 10-8 after Mull’s solo home run in the sixth. Stokely crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to end the scoring.
Rowan hosts Centenary College in its home opener on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m.
