Rowan Defeats TCNJ, 68-60 In NJAC Opener

EWING, NJ – Three players scored in double figures to lead the Rowan University women’s basketball team over The College of New Jersey, 68-60 in the conference opener on Wednesday night.

Forward Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded a double-double with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Danielle Rohe (sr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) contributed with 12 points and guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) added 11. Guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) dished six assists.

TCNJ (2-3) was led by guard Keri Washington (jr. Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) with 17 points and eight boards. Forward Hannah Tait (so. Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) scored 13 points. Guards Candace Vigo (fr. New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick) and Karen Lassoni (sr. New Brunswick, NJ/Becton Reg.) had nine and eight points respectively.

The Profs (4-2) started the second half with a six point advantage (30-24). Tait’s three-pointer put the Lions ahead 32-30 at 17:08. TCNJ was up by six points (38-32) after two foul shots (14:45) by Washington. Rowan scored 13 straight points to lead 45-38 with 10:09 remaining. Rohe had seven of the 13 points. TCNJ answered with a 10-2 run in 3:20 to go ahead 48-47. It was the Lions’ last lead of the game. Rowan pulled away with a 12-3 surge that made the score 59-51 at 3:10. Jennings contributed with three baskets while guard Allie Bassetti (so. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Lamey each had a three.

The closest TCNJ came was three points (59-56) after Lassoni hit a three-pointer with 2:13 on the clock. In the last 1:55 of the game, Rowan was nine for 10 from the free throw line. Lamey made four foul shots while Rohe had three and Jennings followed with two. Rohe and Jennings scored 10 points apiece in the second period.

The Lions were ahead 12-6 at 13:56 in the first half. Catanzariti’s jumper at 11:49 tied the score at 12. The Profs led 16-12 after a basket by Catanzariti (10:35) and Rohe (10:02). Washington made a three to trail by one (16-15) with 8:54 left. A 12-2 run in a span of 5:31 gave Rowan an 11 point advantage (28-17). Jennings accumulated 10 of the 12 points. The Profs were ahead 30-24 at the intermission.

Rowan travels to John Jay College on Saturday, December 5 for a 1 p.m. nonconference game.
