GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team won 75-62 over nonconference opponent York College (PA) in the season opener on Tuesday night.
The Profs had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) contributed with 15 points and 14 boards. Forward Michele Lala (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added 14 and 12 points respectively. Lamey also dished nine assists.
For the Spartans (1-1), guard April Sparkman (jr. Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) totaled 21 points and seven rebounds. Guard Khadija Mitchell (so. Bel Air, MD/Mercy) scored 14 points and had six steals.
Rowan was ahead 35-32 after the first half. In the second period, Jennings gave the Profs a seven-point lead (45-38) with a layup at the 15 minute mark. York answered with a basket (14:35) and a three-pointer (13:39) by guard Jamie Polan (sr. York, PA/West York) to cut the deficit to two points (45-43). Sparkman’s layup tied the score at 47 with 11:27 remaining.
Rowan answered with seven straight points to lead 54-47 at 8:40. Catanzariti had four points and Lamey added three in the run. Forward Erin Farrell (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) nailed two free throws (7:31) that made the score 59-49. The Spartans pulled within six points (61-55) at 6:27 on guard Gayle Exley’s (jr. Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) layup. It was the closest York came for the remainder of the game. The Profs scored 10 unanswered points for a 16 point advantage (71-55) with 2:20 left.
Jennings and Lamey each registered nine points in the second half. Catanzariti pulled down 10 rebounds. Sparkman compiled 12 points for the Spartans.
In the first stanza, Rowan had the lead until the final two minutes. Mitchell hit a three (1:55) to put York on top, 32-31, for the first time. Jennings made two fouls shots (1:47) and she had a jumper (0:07) for a 35-32 advantage at the intermission. She ended the first half with 14 points.
