GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team defeated visiting Catholic University, 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Forward Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) and midfielder Ashley Adams (so. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek) each scored a goal. Midfielders Julie Cairone (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee), Jenna Lombardo (sr. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.) and Janna Tighe (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gateway Reg.) all had one assist.
Rowan, ranked eighth in the nation, has a 10-4 record while Catholic is 9-4 on the season. The Profs totaled 15 shots and the Cardinals took six. Goalie Lisa Apt (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made four saves for her fourth shutout. For Catholic, goalie Marian Cassilly (sr. Gambrills, MD/Archbishop Spalding) stopped seven shots.
With 5:41 left in the first half, Valianti put the Profs up 1-0. Cairone took a penalty corner and Tighe stopped the pass before Valianti blasted a shot into the Cardinals’ cage. It was Valianti’s ninth goal on the year. In the second period, Adams tipped in a shot by Lombardo at 50:59.
Rowan is home against on Saturday, October 24 against Frostburg State University. The game time has been moved to 7 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. as originally scheduled.
