Rowan Shuts Out Christopher Newport, 2-0

STEVENSON, MD – The Rowan University field hockey team shut out Christopher Newport University, 2-0 on Monday. The game was played at Stevenson University.

The win ended the Captains’ seven-game win streak. Rowan has an 8-4 record while Christopher Newport is 9-3 overall.

Both of the Profs’ goals came in the first half. Midfielder Julie Cairone (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored the first one at the three minute mark and forward Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) had the assist. It was Cairone’s fourth goal on the season. Back Lauren Conner (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had the second goal on a penalty stroke at 16:46. This week, Conner was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Rowan totaled 21 shots and Christopher Newport took 10. Goalie Lisa Apt (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made three saves for her third shutout. For the Captains, goalie Emma Stout (sr. Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) stopped four shots.

Rowan hosts Kean University on Saturday, October 17 in a 1 p.m. conference game.
