Rowan Defeats Eighth Ranked TCNJ, 3-2 in overtime

EWING, NJ – Back Lauren Conner scored the winning goal in overtime for the Rowan University field hockey team in a 3-2 victory over conference opponent The College of New Jersey.

Conner (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) recorded the game-winner on a penalty stroke with 1:19 left in overtime. The win ended TCNJ’s 20 game conference win streak. Rowan is 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. TCNJ has a 6-3 record with a 2-1 conference mark. This week, the Lions were ranked eighth in the nation while the Profs were 14th.

Midfielder Julie Cairone (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) gave Rowan a 2-1 advantage at 30:05. She knocked in a loose ball after a blocked shot by forward Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood). At 65:25, forward Caitlyn Jenkins (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) deflected in a shot off the stick of midfielder Kellyn Riley (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.).

Forward Lauren Ross (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) put Rowan on the scoreboard first at 7:40. Ross scored on a pass from midfielder Jenna Lombardo (sr. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.). Forward Jessica Falcone (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) tied the score at 23:03 and forward Jillian Nealon (fr. Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had the assist.

TCNJ out shot Rowan, 17-7. For the Profs, goalie Lisa Apt (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) turned away four shots. In the Lions’ cage, Shannon Syciarz (so. Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made one save.

Next, Rowan will play Christopher Newport University on Monday, October 12 at 4 p.m. The game will be held at Stevenson University (MD).
