Men's Basketball Drops NJAC Opener to #14 Montclair State, 100-86

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Rowan fell behind in the first half and despite 21 points from Brycen Williams, was defeated by #14 Montclair State, 100-86, in the NJAC opener for both teams, which left the Profs still seeking their first win of the year.
 
Williams converted 8-for-15 from the field for his sixth double-figure game of the year. Taz Cantey scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds with Chris McCarron chipping in a season-high 12 points. C.J. Hayes recorded a personal best of 10 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Nic Johnson scored 11, for his first double-figure game at Rowan.
 
Rowan (0-6; 0-1)  trailed by double-digits at halftime and despite shooting 55 percent and outscoring the Red Hawks in the second half, Montclair State converted 55.6 percent from the field to maintain its margin throughout.
 
The Profs came within 13, 65-52, after a layup from Johnson with over 14 minutes to play in the second half. Montclair State (5-0; 1-0) answered with a 13-3 run to own a comfortable 78-55 advantage.
 
The teams traded leads in the early minutes of the game, but Montclair State took the lead for good with 13:20 remaining, using an 8-0 run to go up, 21-13. McCarron hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 23-18, but the Red Hawks then outscored the Profs, 13-2, over two minutes to go up by, 36-20. Montclair State hit nine three-pointers in the half while Rowan was 2-of-8 from beyond the arc and committed 13 turnovers as the home team led, 48-33, at the intermission.
 
Montclair State took advantage of 23 Rowan turnovers in the game, converting them into a total of 32 points.
 
Rowan gets a break for the holiday and returns to action by visiting Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, December 3. The Profs will host New Jersey City in the NJAC home opener on Saturday, December 6.
