CAMDEN, NJ - Rowan rallied late and tied the game with 10 seconds remaining, but Rutgers-Camden got the final basket and the 70-68 win in NJAC men's basketball action after Caleb Edwards netted the winning points with 7.6 seconds to play.
Â
With Rowan trailing, 68-66,
Brycen Williams hit a short jumper at :09 to tie the game but after a timeout, Cameron Downs tossed a length of the court pass to Caleb Edwards whose dunk was the gamewinner. Rowan (0-7; 0-2 NJAC) couldn't get a shot off but maintained possession at 0.5 on a held ball. Williams got the ball in the corner on the inbounds but his three-point attempt was off the mark.
Khalll Baker scored 15 for Rowan on 7-for-11 shooting with
Taz Cantey scoring 14 and Williams adding 13.
Khamai Orange was the only other Prof in double figures with 10 points
Â
Down 65-60 with 3:49 to play, Rowan went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game, 66-65, using three-pointer from Cantey and a pair of free throws from
Michael Pirone being the go-ahead points.
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as Downs hit a pair of free throws to put Rutgers-Camden (6-1; 1-0) ahead, 67-66, and then Eric Benjamin connected on a foul shot at :35, which was followed by Williams' tying shot.
Â
Rowan trailed by 10 at halftime, but kept within striking distance the entire second half and was within single digits the rest of the way. The Profs chipped away and after a three-pointer by Orange and a bucket by Baker, the deficit was just 57-56 at 6:55. Â
Â
Every time Rowan seemed to close in, Rutgers-Camden would take advantage of a missed shot by the Profs and convert one of their own to maintain the lead.
Â
With the home team up, 65-58, Rowan cut it to 65-61 after a field goal by
Khamai Orange and free throw by Pirone.
Â
Rowan held its longest lead in the opening minutes, 12-7, before Rutgers-Camden took over and scored 11 in a row to take an 18-12 advantage. A three-pointer by
Chris McCarron and a jumper from
Ife Okebiorun pulled the Profs within, 30-29, with 3:09 left, before the Scarlet Raptors netted the final nine points of the half to own a 39-29 lead at intermission.
Â
Neither team shot well from the perimeter with Rowan going 4-for-16 and Rutgers-Camden hitting just 2-of-17. The Profs were hurt by a 20-for-33 effort from the foul line, which included going 15-for-26 in the second half.
Â
The Profs will play the conference home opener on Saturday when they host NJCU in the first game of the doubleheader at 1 p.m.
