Khalil Baker had 19 points in 22 minutes, but Johns Hopkins went on an 11-3 run down the stretch to defeat Rowan, 79-73, in the Profs' men's basketball home opener at Esby Gym.
Baker had his highest scoring game as a Prof to date as the junior transfer shot 8-for-16 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.
Brycen Williams scored 15 points and
Taz Cantey had 12 points and seven assists with
Dan Mason contributing eight boards.
Rowan (0-4) went on a 7-0 run, including a three-point play by Butler to take a 69-63 lead with over five minutes to play. The visitors tied it at 69-69, and after the Profs went ahead, 71-69, Jeb Williams connected on a three-pointer which gave JHU the lead for good, 72-71, at 3:06.
Johns Hopkins (2-1) expanded on that and even though Cantey cut the deficit to 76-73, at :22, the Profs couldn't convert in the final seconds and Logan Feller iced the game with a pair of free throws at :02.
It was a tight game throughout the second half as the teams traded leads and the Profs' six-point margin was the biggest lead of the period, until the Blue Jays' winning margin.
The Profs shot 45.8 percent for the game, and although hitting 5-of-9 from three-point range in the first half, were just 1-for-7 in the second half. Johns Hopkins won the battle of the boards, with a 46-33 advantage.
Johns Hopkins led for the majority of the first half, and held a 24-18 lead with 8:55 to play. The Profs took their first lead of the game, 26-24, on a three by Khalil Butler.
Dan Mason tied the game, 31-31, on a three with 2:51 left in the half, but the Blue Jays closed it out with a 9-3 run to own a 40-34 halftime lead.
Rowan goes on the road for three straight, starting with Thursday's game at Delaware Valley. The Profs will open conference play on November 25th at #23 Montclair State.
