Late Run by Rutgers-Camden Leads to 75-73 Loss for Men's Basketball

CAMDEN, NJ - Rutgers-Camden used a late run to break a tie and record a 75-74 win over Rowan (10-9; 7-5) in NJAC men's basketball action.

With the contest tied at 67-67, Rutgers-Camden (7-9; 2-8) used a 7-2 run to take a 74-69 lead with 50 seconds remaining,  and then tacked on a pair of free throws for a 74-69 lead. Brycen Williams connected on a three-pointer at :18 to pull the Profs within, 74-72. Rowan stole the inbounds pass at :12 and Khalif Meares was fouled, and made one of two free throws with :05 to play.  Jordan Trusty-Smith made one of two from the line at :04 for Rutgers-Camden to provide the final margin as Rowan's last chance, a shot by Taz Cantey at :01 was off the mark.

Meares led Rowan with 17 points, Williams had 16 with three three-pointers, Danny Fleming scored 13 and Cantey netted 12 points for the Profs.

The Profs had a five-point lead early in the second half, but Rutgers-Camden went ahead, 50-49 at 12:24. From there the game went back and forth, until Rowan held another five-point lead, 65-60, with four minutes to play that Rutgers-Camden would erase in the final minutes.

In the first half, Rowan put together a 10-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 19-11, with four points from Meares and ending with a three-pointer by Drew Amos. Trailing 21-12, the Scarlet Raptors scored 10 straight points to take a 22-21 lead with 8:21 left. The teams traded leads and were tied twice more before Rowan netted eight in a row to regain the lead, 37-29, and led 37-31 at halftime.

Rowan struggled from the foul line in the second half, making 7-for-13 to finish the game going 15-for-23.

The Profs are on the road again on Saturday with a 3 p.m. start at William Paterson.
