FREDERICKSBURG, VA -
Johnny Troiano scored two goals and #9 Rowan men's soccer gave top-ranked Mary Washington a scare, but UMW prevailed, scoring the gamewinner with 12 minutes to play in a 3-2 victory. It was the first loss for the Profs in four games against Top 25 teams, moving their record to 2-2-3 on the year.
UMW (7-0-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute and held that through halftime. Troiano tied the game at 52:25 as he ran onto a through ball and left-footed it into the left side of the net from 15 yards out.
Troiano netted the go-ahead goal just six minutes later as
Jake Homowitz sent him a pass that he put into the right side of the net, from about the same distance. It was Troiano's team-high eighth goal of the year.
Mary Washington tied the game at 65:45 on a goal by Gerrard Valoyi with Jared Dubose scoring the gamewinner at 78:08.
The Profs were on the attack in the final minutes of the game, but couldn't get the ball past UMW keeper Freddy Rogers.
Rowan's
Dylan Aportela made a career-high nine saves in the game as UMW held a slim 20-18 edge in shots.
The Profs will take on their fifth Top 25 opponent when they visit #13 Christopher Newport Saturday evening as a continuation of this Virginia trip.
