GLASSBORO, NJ -- #6 Christopher Newport left Esbjornson Gymnasium with an 82-57 decision over Rowan Wednesday afternoon.
Kate Herlihy and
Sabrina Araujo each netted 11 points for the Profs, but the Captains opened up a six-point halftime lead (37-31) outscoring the home team, 32-17, in the third to open up a close contest.
CNU's Nicole Timko led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, hitting on five of the team's 11 three-pointers.
Arajuo's three with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter made it a 38-38 contest but Christopher Newport ran off a 32-10 spurt the rest of the frame, paced by Timko's eight points in that stretch.
Trailing 23-18 to end the first, Rowan saw the deficit grow to as much as 10 (35-25) with just over a minute for halftime before trimming the deficit to 37-31 at the break. CNU forced Rowan to commit 11 of its 26 turnovers in the game in that third quarter to help with the visitor's scoring stretch that the Profs could not overcome.
Savanna Holt kicked in 10 points off the bench while
Kristina Johnson tied a career-high with nine rebounds.
Rowan will look to snap its three-game skid on Saturday when the Profs visit Kean in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup starting at 3 p.m.
