GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan's
Nicole Mallard scored 20 points but it wasn't enough as Ramapo pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Profs a 63-51 defeat in NJAC women's basketball action at Esby Gym.
Kate Herlihy scored 13 for Rowan (9-11; 6-7 NJAC) on 4-for-6 shooting while
Eliana Santana scored 12, as she hit 5-of-8 shots, and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
Although Rowan owned a brief 39-38 lead early in the fourth quarter, Ramapo (13-7; 9-4) ran off seven straight points to take a 45-39 edge with over seven minutes to play. A three from Herlihy and free throws from Mallard and Santana pulled Rowan within one, 45-44, but Ramapo outscored the Profs, 9-1, to take a 54-45 lead with 3:00 to go. The Profs managed just one field goal the rest of the way and the Roadrunners put the game away with a 10-point margin with 46 seconds remaining.
Trailing 28-19 at the start of the third quarter, the Profs fought back. An 11-0 run, with four points apiece from Santana and Mallard, allowed Rowan to take a 30-29 lead. Ramapo regained the advantage, 38-33, but Santana ended the quarter with a pair of baskets to pull the Profs within, 38-37.
Hot-shooting by Ramapo (7-for-14), and cold shooting by the Profs (3-of-11) in the second quarter allowed the Roadrunners to take a 28-19 halftime lead.
The Profs held the lead at the end of the low-scoring first half, 12-9, after they scored the last six points, including a layup by Herlihy with 36 seconds left in the period.
Rowan makes the short trip to Rutgers-Camden for a mid-week meeting on January 31, and then plays its final two regular-season home games on February 3rd vs. Kean and NJCU on February 7th. The regular season wraps up on the road on February 14th at Montclair State.
