Volleyball Tripped Up by #21 Mary Washington, 3-1

GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan fell 3-1 to #21 Mary Washington here at Esbjornson Gymnasium Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-21, 26-28, 25-16, and 25-18.

The Profs battled to win a wild second set totaling 17 kills in the frame but could only manage 11 over the final two.

Jena Kaul led Rowan with eight kills. Isabel Kirchner added seven and kicked in three blocks. Sydni Greenwood and rookie Ciara Bradley each contributed five enders with Bradley totaling five blocks. Setter Brooke Adams produced 31 assists along with six digs, three blocks, two aces and two kills.

The Eagles' Jordan Lyons put up a match-high 16 kills as Mary Washington put together a 51-24-148 (.182) hitting line, including 13 kills apiece in the third and fourth sets.

In the first set, Rowan erased an early 9-4 deficit to climb ahead, 11-10 thanks to back-to-back kills from Kirchner and Bradley. UMW later broke a 16-16 tie and held off the Profs to go up 1-0. It was the home team getting out to a 9-4 lead, this time in the second set and got the edge up to 17-12. Now up 23-21, the Eagles got three-straight kills to reclaim the advantage. Facing a 26-25 score, Rowan ran off three points of its own as a kill from Kaul cemented the 28-26 score.

The momentum seemingly carried over into the third set as the Profs got out to a 6-1 lead, but the Eagles had other plans. Now ahead 11-6, Mary Washington ran off eight points in a row as part of a 12-1 run.

Trailing two sets to one and down 5-1 in the fourth, Rowan got it to 7-6 but could not take a lead as UMW pulled away to claim the win.

The team will return to action on Thursday in a match at Swarthmore at 7 p.m.
