GLASSBORO, NJ –
Nicole Mallard scored 20 points and
Danielle McCurdy had 13, to lead Rowan to a 79-66 win over Kean in NJAC women's basketball action today at Esby Gym. The win improves Rowan to 8-6 and 4-3 in the conference.
It marked the third 20-plus point game of the year for Mallard, as she made 12-of-15 from the foul line. McCurdy added six rebounds, three steals and a season-high five blocks, while connecting on 5-of-10 from the field.
Savanna Holt also hit for double figures with 10 points, as she made three three-pointers.
Rowan led from early in the first quarter and held on the whole way, although Kean rallied in the third quarter to erase the Profs' double-digit lead. With the Profs leading 34-23 at the start of the third quarter, Kean (6-8; 4-3 NJAC) outscored the home team, 14-6, to close to within 40-37 on a three-pointer by Sarah Olivero. But McCurdy hit a pair of free throws to start a 9-0 Rowan run, that ended with a three from
Kate Herlihy to give the Profs a 49-37 advantage. Holt ended the quarter with a three-pointer of her own as Rowan held a 56-44 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Kean ran off six straight points with under eight minutes to play to cut Rowan's lead to 62-55, before McCurdy's pull-up jmper at 5:27 gave the Profs some breathing room, 64-55. Five straight points from
Grace Marshall pushed Rowan's lead up to 70-58 with 3:19 to play.
Rowan's largest lead of the game, 29-11, came at the start of the second quarter where the Profs scored nine consecutive points. Mallard had four points and
Reagan Russo connected on a three-pointer in the 9-0 run.
The Profs will take to the road for their next two games, heading to Montclair State on Wednesday and to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
