GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan had a fourth quarter rally come up just short as the Profs fell to New Jersey City, 87-82, Wednesday night in NJAC action at Esbjornson Gymnasium.
Grace Marshall netted 13 of her 16 points in that fourth quarter as the fifth year player was one of four Profs in double figures.
Eliana Santana scored 18 points to lead Rowan with
Nicole Mallard adding 14 and
Ny'emah Middleton chipping in 12.
Damaris Rodriguez led all scorers, finishing with a game-high 34 points and adding 12 assists for the Gothic Knights.
The Profs fell behind by as much as 14 (74-60) early in the fourth, but battled back to get it to just six, with the last instance coming with just under a minute to play. NJCU's Briana Davis then added a bucket in the paint and blocked a shot in the ensuing defensive possession to turn the tide for good.
The Gothic Knights led 14-13 after the first quarter as the two teams went a combined 4-for-33 in the first 10 minutes. In the second, both squads found their respective groove especially Rodriguez, who scored 14 in the stanza to help give the visitors a 45-36 lead at the half.
Two free throws from Santana late in the third whittled the deficit to 62-56. A 12-4 run late in the third into the fourth by NJCU was capped by a three from Rodriguez, giving the Gothic Knights a 74-60 advantage. Back-to-back buckets from Mallard and Santana drew the Profs to 76-70 with 5:02 remaining, and after another late push made it 85-79, Rowan could not gain the lead. Middleton hit a three at the buzzer to account for the final score.
Jada Camacho kicked in 16 points for NJCU while Davis finished with six points and three blocks.
Rowan is right back at it on Saturday when the team battles Kean here in Glassboro in a NJAC matchup starting at 1 p.m.
