GLASSBORO, NJ –
Johnny Troiano scored two late goals, both assisted by
Chad Yates, to rally Rowan to a 2-2 tie with Kean in the NJAC men's soccer opener for both teams. It marked the first two goals of Troiano's career. Rowan is now 5-3-2 (0-0-1 NJAC) with the tie.
Trailing 2-0 at 12 minutes into the second half, the Profs had a number of scoring chances and finally capitalized at 71:51. Yates made a move past the Kean defenders and sent a perfect pass to Troiano on his left, who buried the shot into the right corner of the net.
The pair combined for a similar play at 84:42, when Yates send a short pass to Troiano just inside the box, and the freshman sent it into the left corner of the net.
Kean (4-3-2; 0-0-1 NJAC) struck first at 30:19, when Eric Chickas intercepted a back pass to Profs' keeper
Chay Kaplan and scored from about 12 yards out.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead at 57:55 when Santi Alzate connected on a free kick from 25 yards out.
Rowan held a 12-6 advantage in shots with Kaplan making two saves and Kean goalkeeper Dominic Ridge making five.
The meeting between the teams was the first since they battled in the 2021 NJAC Championship game to a 0-0 tie, with Kean winning the title on penalty kicks.
The Profs continue NJAC play on the road, heading to NJCU on Wednesday and at Rutgers-Newark on October 1.
