TOWSON, MD. -- Rowan went 1-1 at Saturday's tri-match at Goucher, defeating the host Gophers, 3-0, but falling to Eastern, 3-0.
Against Goucher (25-19, 25-22, 26-24), Rowan used big scoring stretches late to take the first two sets, before holding off the hosts from a run of their own in the third. The Profs used a balanced attack as four players had five or more kills each led by
Jena Kaul with a match-high nine.
Sydni Greenwood added eight kills with
Courtney Rhoden six and
Isabel Kirchner with five. The aforementioned trio combined for 10 blocks as well.
Jackie Camponelli racked up six service aces along with 11 digs.
Simone Sparano totaled a team-high 16 digs.
In the first, the Profs ended the set on a 13-2 run after falling behind by as much as five (17-12). Rowan took a late lead in the second set to go up 2-0.
Back-to-back kills from Kirchner and Greenwood in the third set put the Profs on the verge, to lead 23-16. Goucher would not go away, managing to knot things up at 24-24 thanks to a 7-1 run. Rowan closed out the sweep by notching the next two points.
For the Gophers, Riley Kosell recorded a double double with 13 assists and 12 digs. Teammate Kaliee Turner added eight kills, five aces, five digs, and three blocks (one solo).
Eastern hit .239 (40-14-109) the next match to frustrate Rowan in handing the Profs its first defeat on the season.
Brianna Newson paced the Rowan attack with a match-high 12 kills. Sparano registered 16 digs while
Brooke Adams added 23 assists and six digs.
Down 2-0, the Profs looked to send it to a fourth set a late ace from
Maya Iovacchini put Rowan ahead, 21-20. The Eagles netted the next five points to cement the outcome.
Rowan returns to action on Tuesday as Stockton visits Glassboro for a NJAC showdown starting at 7 p.m.
