CAMDEN, NJ -- Rowan opened New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-10) at Rutgers-Camden Tuesday night.
Natalie Ogden led all attackers with a match-high 11 kills.
Courtney Rhoden and
Isabel Kirchner each added seven kills as the Profs improved to 8-0 on the year. Rhoden added five blocks (one solo) while
Jackie Camponelli and
Maya Iovacchini served up a total of seven aces.
Rowan's hitting percentage improved in each set as the third frame had the Profs putting together a 14-3-24 attack line in leading from start to finish to pick up the first NJAC victory on the season.
After the Scarlet Raptors ran off five points in a row in the first set to take a 16-12 lead, the Profs countered with a 7-2 spurt to jump back ahead. Later with the teams tied at 21-21, the visitors ran off the last five points capped with a kill from Kirchner for a 1-0 lead.
Another scoring stretch in the second helped open up a tied contest courtesy of four-straight points. Sparano's ace made it a 12-8 score and prompted a Rutgers-Camden timeout. Rowan kept that lead throughout the set and would go up 2-0 after a kill from Ogden.
In the third, the Profs came out red hot, scoring the first five points and later held a 14-2 advantage. Three aces from Sparano and three kills from
Brianna Newson was part of a big 6-0 run to open up a sizable lead where the team was able to lock up the win.
For the Scarlet Raptors, Brynn Hassan registered a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs. Dymond Free had seven kills while Isabella Choice and Eric Nebrich added five respectively.
Rowan returns home to face Cabrini on Thursday in a 7 p.m. start.
