Volleyball Downs Catholic and Widener in Home Tri-Match

GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan swept a home tri-match on Saturday here at Esbjornson Gymnasium, defeating Widener, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23), and later Catholic, 3-1 (23-25, 30-28, 25-21, 25-22).

Natalie Ogden and Jena Kaul spearheaded the attack, as the duo totaled 61 of the team's 98 kills on the day. Ogden had 14 kills against the Pride and 20 vs. the Cardinals, both match highs. Kaul added 18 in that four-set win over Catholic.

Against Widener, the Profs had to fight off the Pride in the third set, getting through 14 ties and nine lead changes. Ogden (14 kills), Kaul (9 kills), Courtney Rhoden (8 kills), Sydni Greenwood (7 kills) helped the team churn out 43 kills.

In the dig department, Simone Sparano collected 15 with Vanessa Hutchinson (11) and Ogden (10) also hitting double figures. Hutchinson kicked in five aces as well.

Rowan had to grind out that third set, as the two teams did not hold a lead more than three points.

The match against Catholic also featured four close sets. After falling in the first, the Profs had to go to 30-28 in the second, including staving off set point on three occasions. Ogden totaled eight in the second set to tie things up at 1-1. The third set was a chess match of swings as each team put together scoring stretches to climb ahead of one another. The Profs' last burst ended with a block from Greenwood and Brooke Adams to lock up the 25-22 score.

Trailing 21-20 in the fourth set, Rowan produced a 5-1 spurt that featured a pair of kills from Ogden including the decisive ender to give the home team the win.

In all, the match had 24 ties and 15 lead changes.

Adams doled out 50 assists to go along with her four digs, three blocks, and two aces. Maya Iovacchini kicked in a career-best four aces to boot.

In the middle match, Catholic took down Widener, 3-0.

Next up for the Profs is Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday on the road to kick off NJAC play. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
