PITMAN, NJ -- The New Jersey Athletic Conference honored five Profs in its weekly award program for the week ending February 6th.
Josh Wright was selected the NJAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week. The track & field teams featured
Makayla Taylor as the NJAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week and
Marquise Young as its NJAC Men's Track & Field Rookie of the Week. In women's swimming,
Veronica Alferez was named the NJAC Swimmer of the Week with
Bella Stefanowicz chosen as the NJAC Rookie of the Week.
Wright averaged 16.3 points per game in the Profs' 3-0 week, while converting 45.4 percent (15-for-33) from the field and 92.8 percent (13-for-14) from the foul line. The freshman, who earns the NJAC award for the second time this year, scored 20 points in a 100-73 win over Rutgers-Camden. He followed that 21 points, and three three-point field goals, in the 80-65 win at Rutgers-Newark.
Taylor hit a season-best mark and second-best in the NJAC in winning the shot put on Saturday at the Bomber Invite hosted by Ithaca. The senior topped out at 12.41 meters for her third-best attempt in the event. She also placed seventh in the weight throw.
Young ran the fastest NJAC mark and 19th fastest time in Division III this season in the 60 meter hurdles, also at the Bomber Invite. His finished in second place with a time of 8.30.
Alferez and Stefanowicz helped key the Profs to a 170-130 win over Merchant Marine here at home on Saturday to finish the dual meet portion of the schedule undefeated. Alferez won three events on the day; the 500 free (5:17.08), 1000 free (10:44.54) and the 200 IM (2:14.31), and was part of the 200 free relay squad that was third (1:46.71). Stefanowicz picked up a first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.59), a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.82), and a third in the 200 IM (2:15.13).
The men's basketball team (18-4, 11-4 NJAC) travels to NJCU on Wednesday and will host Ramapo on Saturday this week. With three games remaining in the regular season, Rowan is still in the hunt for the top playoff seed.
Both the men's and women's track & field teams are back in action this weekend as well. The squads will head up to Boston University for the Valentine Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Select members of the men's team will take part in the FastTrack Invitational up at the Ocean Breeze Complex on Friday.
The women's swimming team (6-0-1, 4-0-1 NJAC) now preps for the Metropolitan Conference Championships that begin on Thursday, February 17th at Rutgers University.
