Ashley Lechliter and
Shannen Sterner scored three goals apiece to lead the Rowan women's lacrosse team to a 17-6 win over Ursinus in the season opener for both teams and the first game for the Profs as they shifted their home venue to the Rowan Soccer and Lacrosse Complex.
The Profs got two goals each from
Jamie Cutrera,
Erin Renshaw, and
Molly Green, in her collegiate debut, while
Julianna Corson had two goals and two assists.
Elise Cohan netted a pair, and handed out an assist in the victory, with
Hannah Lombardo also contributing a goal.
Although Ursinus got on the board first and took a 2-1 lead, the Profs scored four straight on goals by Corson, Renshaw, Lechliter and Green to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Profs outscored the Bears, 5-1, in the second quarter to take a 10-4 lead into halftime. Sterner and Green started the scoring on free position goals, followed by tallies from Lombardo, Cohan and another free-position goal from Lechliter.
Renshaw assisted on Lechliter's goal to open the Profs' scoring in the third and then netted one of her own on a free position. Sterner scored with 5:28 remaining and Cutrera tallied a goal with :12 left in the third quarter to give Rowan a 14-5 advantage.
Rowan reached the 10-goal advantage early in the fourth, when Corson scored on a free-position at 10:22 and Sterner added another at 7:21. Ursinus could only get one more goal before the Profs closed it out with Cohan scoring off a pass from
Michaela Donnelly.
Starting goalkeeper
Reilly Shaup made 11 saves on the day and
Mel Rodgers finished off the victory in the final five minutes. Rowan outshot the Bears, 36-25, and forced 17 Ursinus turnovers.
Rowan goes on the road on March 1 to face the preseason #1 team Salisbury and then to Stevens on March 5 before returning home on March 9 to play Washington (MD).
