AMHERST, MA -- Rowan fell in its season opener to Springfield, 58-52, on Saturday at the Amherst Tip-off Tournament.
Nicole Mallard and
Mycala Carney paced the Profs with 10 points apiece. Mallard also led the squad with seven rebounds, with
Ayanna Johnson and
Danielle McCurdy each grabbing six. Johnson also added three blocks, three assists and a steal.
Springfield's Sam Hourihan led all scorers with 23 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Trailing by one after the first quarter (18-17), the Profs were outscored, 11-4, in the second to trail 29-21 at the half. Rowan went 8-of-19 shooting from the floor and 3-of-8 from downtown in the third to rally and pull within 43-41 heading into the final stanza.
Hourian scored nine of her 23 points in that fourth quarter to help the Pride hold off Rowan. McCarney's layup pulled the Profs to 55-53 with just under a minute to play, but consecutive turnovers on back-to-back possessions down the stretch did not allow Rowan to climb any closer.
For the game, Rowan was 20-of-61 (32.8%) from the floor and outrebounded the Pride, 40-35.
The team is back at tomorrow against the host Mammoths in a 1 p.m. tip.
