Box Score MAHWAH, NJ – Luke Yates, Mason Martelloni and Ryan Cleary all converted penalty kicks after two overtimes with Ramapo, to advance Rowan to the NJAC Men's Soccer Championshp game. With the score tied and after the overtime, the third-seeded Profs outscored second-seeded Ramapo in the penalty kicks, 3-1, to move on to Friday's championship.
The Profs, unbeaten in their last seven games, will travel to top-seeded Montclair State on Friday, November 4 for the NJAC Championship at 7 p.m.
Goalkeeper Dylan Aportela, who received All-NJAC Honorable Mention, faced the Roadrunners in his first-ever shootout and made three saves as Ramapo converted just one with Rowan connecting on three.
Rowan (11-5-4) led for almost the entire regulation as Johnny Troiano scored at the outset of the game, just 1:29 into it, and the Profs held that 1-0 lead until four minutes left in the match. Alex Ferrara, an All-NJAC Second Team selection, touched ball to Troiano, who connected from just inside the box.
Damian Zurawski netted the equalizer for the home team, heading in a pass from Osbin Mendez at 86:03. It was the first goal allowed by the Profs' Dylan Aportela in the past seven games as he had recorded six consecutive shutouts.
"Today was a big team win. We had chances that could have won the game in regulation and we will continue to work on that," said head coach Scott Baker. "With that said, Dylan Aportela was the man of the match. Winning PKs is not easy but when your goalkeeper makes three saves, it makes it much easier. Ryan Cleary, Mason Martelloni and Luke Yates made important kicks to seal the win."
