GLASSBORO, NJ - The 12th-ranked Rowan men's soccer team's comeback attempt fell short, as Rutgers-Newark upset the Profs, 2-1, in NJAC action in the home opener at the Rowan Soccer Complex. It was the Profs' first loss of the year, after they started the season with six consecutive road wins.
Trailing 2-0, Rowan pulled to 2-1 as Wilby Alfred notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season when he dribbled down the right side, beat one defender and scored at 69:12. Alfred has now tallied seven goals in the last five matches.
Rutgers-Newark took a 1-0 lead when it twas awarded a penalty kick at 20:28 and Franco Catania made it count. Rutgers found the net again less than two minutes later as Joshua Breton-Jones took a low cross from Miguel Sencion on the left side and put it into the net on the right.
Rowan had a chance on a penalty kick with 29:09 left in the match, but RU goalkeeper Andres Medina denied Leo Montesinos' attempt.
The Profs' comeback attempt was made more difficult late in the game as they played a man down for the final 18:24 and then two men down for the final eight minutes.
Rutgers-Newark had a slight edge in shots, 11-9, and Rowan keeper James Weinberg made five saves.
The Profs return to action on Wednesday night with another home NJAC match against TCNJ at 7 p.m.
