GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Rowan defeated Catholic and Widener on Saturday to go 3-0 over the weekend in their home quad match here at Esby Gymnasium.
In the day's first match, the Profs took down Catholic, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-20) and capped the action with an exciting 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Widener, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23).
Natalie Ogden stayed red hot, notching a pair of double-doubles in the two wins. Against Catholic, she dialed up a match-high 19 kills and added 11 digs. In the nightcap with Widener, Ogden kicked in 11 kills and 10 digs.
The Profs led from start to finish in the first set vs. Cardinals and used an 18-kill second set to go up 2-0. The third set saw Rowan stave off a late Catholic push.
Brianna Newson also went four double-figure kills with 10. Libero
Simone Sparano notched 10 digs. The team hit over .200 for the second-straight match, going 46-21-111 (.225).
The last match of the meet was the provided the most drama as Rowan was able to put away the Pride in four sets, as a huge 11-point run helped rally the squad to get the team to match-point and seal up the victory.
Odgen and Newson, along with
Courtney Rhoden (11) all went for double-digit kills with setter
Brooke Adams throwing in 32 assists, seven aces, and three digs. Newson also racked up three total blocks to boot.
After Widener took the first set, the Profs broke open an 18-18 score with seven straight points including three aces from Adams in that mix to even things up at one.
The third set featured 10 ties and seven lead changes with neither team leading by more than five points.
In that wild fourth set, the Pride led early on and build their lead to as much as 19-13, looking to force a decisive fifth. The Profs then caught fire, going on an 11-0 run to get it to game point. Rowan was able to lock up the win on an attack error and hand Widener their first loss of the season.
The Profs kick off NJAC play on Tuesday when they travel to William Paterson in a 7 p.m. start.
