Men's Basketball Falls Late to Montclair State, 89-84

MONTCLAIR, NJ – An 8-3 run in the final 30 seconds lifted Montclair State to an 89-84 win over Rowan in NJAC men's basketball action today. Matt Green had a team-high 18 points for Rowan (6-8; 2-5 NJAC) with Jerry Price chipping in 17.

Diante Bah had 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds while Ryan O'Leary had 15 and Maliq Sanders added 10 for Rowan. Damian Smith grabbed a career-high three steals.
 
The game was nip-and-tuck as the teams traded leads the entire game. With 5:39 left in the game, Rowan held a 75-71 lead but Montclair (8-6; 6-1) answered and took a 78-75 lead. Green hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 80-80 with :44 to play but MSU's Steve Breeman connected on a jumper at :30 to give the Red Hawks the lead for good.
 
Justin Porter hit two free throws at :20 and Breeman put the game away going 4-for-4 from the line in the final nine seconds.
 
Rowan fought back from a nine-point deficit in the second half as Montclair held a 47-38 lead. The Profs went on a 10-2 run, with six points from O'Leary, to pull within a point, 49-48, at 15:30. The Red Hawks maintained the lead until Sanders scored five straight to give Rowan a 64-62 lead at 10:20. The teams traded leads the rest of the way until Breeman's jumper pushed the Red Hawks ahead.
 
Montclair State held an 18-14 lead early on, but the Profs went on a 10-2 run to take the lead, 24-20. The Red Hawks answered back with an 8-0 run and held on to a 43-26 lead at halftime.
 
The Profs shot over 50 percent from the field and three-point range for the game, but were saddled with 11 turnovers in the first half. Montclair State hit 39 percent of their shots in the first half but made more than 50 percent in the second half.
 
Breeman led MSU with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Akbar Hoffman had a game-high 19 points.
 
The Profs return to action on Wednesday, January 15 when they head to Kean in NJAC action.
